4:1 Samuel revealed the word of the Lord ¹  to all Israel.

David Is Rejected by the Philistine Leaders

29:1 The Philistines assembled all their troops ⁴  at Aphek, while Israel camped at the spring that is in Jezreel. 29:2 When the leaders of the Philistines were passing in review at the head of their units of hundreds and thousands, ⁵  David and his men were passing in review in the rear with Achish.

13:17 The God of this people Israel ⁶  chose our ancestors ⁷  and made the people great ⁸  during their stay as foreigners ⁹  in the country ¹⁰  of Egypt, and with uplifted arm ¹¹  he led them out of it.

[4:1]  ¹ tn Heb “and the word of Samuel was.” The present translation understands Samuel to be the speaker of the divine word (“Samuel” is a subjective genitive in this case), although the statement could mean that he was the recipient of the divine word (“Samuel” is an objective genitive in this case) who in turn reported it to Israel.

[4:1]  ² tn Heb “and Israel went out to meet the Philistines for battle.”

[4:1]  ³ tn Heb “the stone, the help.” The second noun is in apposition to the first one and apparently is the name by which the stone was known. Contrast the expression used in 5:1 and 7:12, where the first word lacks the definite article, unlike 4:1.

[29:1]  ⁴ tn Heb “camps.”

[29:2]  ⁵ tn Heb “passing by with respect to hundreds and thousands.” This apparently describes a mustering of troops for the purpose of inspection and readiness.

[13:17]  ⁶ tn Or “people of Israel.”

[13:17]  ⁷ tn Or “forefathers”; Grk “fathers.”

[13:17]  sn Note how Paul identifies with his audience by referring to our ancestors. He speaks as a Jew. God’s design in history is the theme of the speech. The speech is like Stephen’s, only here the focus is on a promised Son of David.

[13:17]  ⁸ tn That is, in both numbers and in power. The implication of greatness in both numbers and in power is found in BDAG 1046 s.v. ὑψόω 2.

[13:17]  ⁹ tn Or “as resident aliens.”

[13:17]  ¹⁰ tn Or “land.”

[13:17]  ¹¹ sn Here uplifted arm is a metaphor for God’s power by which he delivered the Israelites from Egypt. See Exod 6:1, 6; 32:11; Deut 3:24; 4:34; Ps 136:11-12.
